The Winter City
The Winter City opens officially in February. In the Winter City you can hire skates, pulkas, kicks-sleds and ice-fishing rods any day of the week.
At weekends you can try out activities such as dog-sled tours, snow mobile safaris, ice-fishing and ice-sculpting. When hungry, enjoy a meal from the barbecue or in the café. For programme of the weeks events, please contact the Tourist Office.
Polished ice...
On the ice of lake Storsjön you will find Norrland's first proper long-distance skating tracks. Perfect, if you enjoy a longish excursion on skates, but also enjoyable if all your want is to try out the tracks. The tracks, sprayed and show-ploughed daily, run from Badhusparken Park to Brunfloviken or to Andersön Island - a distance of some 20 kilometres. Bring a seat pad and a camera, and off you go!
...or packed snow
If you prefer skiing to skating, or like going for long walks, there are many excellent ski tracks and marked trails on the ice. Take a short trip along the Östersund shoreline, or set off for a full-day excursion across the ice. The landscape is truly magnificent.
Ice climbing
Frösön has an impressive facility for exhilarating high-up adventures and advanced ice climbing. Expert instructors will show you how to handle axes, ropes and climbing boots. A real adrenalin booster.
Downhill skiing
If you like downhill skiing or want to try it out, Gustavsbergsbacken on Frösön is your destination. Only a few minutes away from the city centre of Östersund. Enjoy the excellent piste with half-pipe, children's slope and evening skiing. Note that there is also a completely new ski lift. If you want to test your skills elsewhere, there are 230 other slopes within easy reach. Åre, Vemdalen and Bydalsfjällen are only one hour away by car.
Winter bathing
Enjoy a bath in a heated wood tub, or have a dip in a hole in the ice - real freezing winter fun! Perfect for the office party, for conferences and kick-offs.
